VICTORY ~ facebook.com/georgie

Victory is mine!

Facebook Username

For the past week facebook, and we geeks, have been counting down to the release of facebook user names! I know, I know; what’s the big deal? I’ve got user names on other sites like my twitter account; @pandapoo for example, but facebook uses real names so why do facebook user names matter so much? Well like it or not, for most of us facebook is our ‘home on the web’ and it’s an important part of both social and casual-business networking too. The problem for a long time has been the question of how to give out your facebook URL; do you give out the whole thing; numbers and all? Create a tinyurl or just don’t give it out at all? I often opted for the latter. I’m lucky in having an uncommon name; ‘Georgie Hammerton’ shows up just me on facebook so I stuck with letting people find me by name, but what about ‘John Smith’; how are his friends meant to find him? The answer is a username!

From 5:01AM (GMT) this morning we were able to jump on facebook.com/username and register the user name of our choice, in the first 3 minutes 200,000 user names were registered. And I, Georgie Hammerton, fastest fingers in the west, was up at 4:30am, counting down with my fellows on twitter, and at 5:01AM managed to snag facebook.com/georgie I’m a very proud man. My girlfriend, with whom I’m on holiday with at the moment, was not as impressed when I woke her up to ask if she wanted to get her username after some persuasion she managed ‘cat.bebb’ and is a happy lady (not as happy as me with ‘georgie’ *grin*.

I briefly spoke to the guy who got facebook.com/usernames, after a tip from Eddie, but he wasn’t happy 5 minutes later when facebook had decided to make that URL redirect to facebook.com/username, he’s stuck with his own name now; so old fashioned.

If you got yours already then please share them in the comments and if you haven’t then GET A MOVE ON!

I can finally say good-bye to http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=272701731, and hello to facebook.com/georgie hmm.. time to order some new contact cards me thinks!

Ciao!

My Favourite iPhone Apps

Today’s the day that my parents both got new work phones; iPhones none the less, I’d promised to put together a quick list of the essential apps (in no particular order) and thought I’d share it here for my fellow iPhone users, as a matter of interest if you do have an iPhone or iPod touch please share your favourite apps in the comments if you think I’ve missed something! =)

iphone-apps

RemoteFree – Allows you to control your iTunes library or AppleTV remotely over your Wifi network.

NetNewsWireFree – Uses the NewsGator RSS reader service which will sync between the iPhone, Web and Desktop (mac/pc) apps.

FacebookFree – A handy way to access your facebook account on the go.

Twitterific Premium£5.99 - A great twitter client, there is a free version with ads but for me it’s worth the money for it to just get the tweets I want.

TapDefenseFree – Possibly the most addictive strategy game you’ll ever play, massively good fun and fiendishly hard to begin with, don’t give up though!

Units£0.59 – Massively useful unit converter; convert lengths, weights, speed, temperature, currency, time and loads more quickly and easily.

Sodoku Unlimited£1.79 – The best application for killing five minutes waiting for a meeting or five hours on a train journey to Paris, I had no idea how much fun Sudoku was until this app taught me how to play; I massively recommend this app.

ShazamFree – When you hear a song on the radio, in a film or playing in a shop, just whip out your iPhone open Shazam, it then listens to what’s playing and tells you within seconds what it was with a link to buy it on iTunes; SO very useful.

Tap Tap RevengeFree – Essentially this game is Guitar Hero for the iPhone and much better than the official release; great fun and you really can’t argue with the price.

Tap Tap Dance£2.99 – If you like Tap Tap Revenge then you will LOVE this, the updated design makes it a joy and the music catalogue is a boost too, highly recommended and massively addictive.

FortuneFree – Fun little fortune cookie app, you can submit your own fortunes to the database and other users will receive them as you receive those submitted by others, not useful but good clean fun.

Lightsaber UnleashedFree – Everyone’s favourite way to get the ‘okay, now that’s cool!’ reaction from their friends when you turn your iPhone into a lightsaber.

GPS TrackerFree – Using the free instamapper service your friends and family can follow you online on long journeys, I use this on my 5 hour  drives to and from university so that friends and family know how long I have left on my journey. NB. App needs to be running in order for tracking to work, a bit of a battery killer on long journeys too.

So I’m Not The Only One Who Isn’t Feeling Christmassy

But why? Facebook seems to agree.

I love Christmas; I spend half the year looking forward to Christmas but I feel like it’s not even happening this year. What’s going on world!? Where is my festive cheer!?

Facebook Christmas

My Sister the Elf

Alice the ElfI don’t usually do ‘personal’ posts but hey, this is just too cute not to share and I promise not to start blogging about my cats any time soon.

Oh my God! How cute is Alice as an elf!? My mum sent this picture (right) to me yesterday, and also to just about every other family member in her address book, mind you; I did almost exactly the same thing.. Turns out she took it from someone’s facebook photos; she’s such a facebook stalker that woman!

I can’t believe that not only has my little sister just turned 18 but she’s also an elf! My big grown up little elf sister is working at Lapland UK this winter, making little kids dreams come true! I read an article about this place last night and there’s an awesome quote:

It’s a magical moment that brings to mind these touching words from Lapland UK’s terms and conditions: “We cannot be liable for any distress or disappointment if any child (or adult) loses his or her belief in Father Christmas.”

Ellie leaves with belief intact – and it takes us just under the hour to get back from Lapland. We’re both happy.

As I’m writing this I just received another email from my mum saying,

The hats have a bell on except a few and if you don’t have a bell, the kids are told you are a naughty elf – Alice was a naughty elf last week (you get given a different hat each time) and also they wear boots with curly toes and yesterday a little girl asked Alice ‘Why do your boots have curly ends?’ Alice said – ‘ To put my curly toes in. Where do you put your curly toes?’ and the little girl said ‘ I DON’T HAVE CURLY TOES!!!!!???!!!’ Haha ha – so funny!!

I think mum might be having trouble letting go of the fact that both of her kids are now adults and is stalking them to make up for it. I do love my family! :)

Getting Back to the Old Facebook

Personally I’ve been using the ‘new’ facebook site at www.new.facebook.com for the last couple of months; it’s taken a bit of getting used to but personally, now that I’m used to it I really rather like it. That aside there is a way to get back to the ‘old’ facebook now which I discovered via a group on the site, according to the group;

“EVERYONE THIS IS HOW U GO BACK:

http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=2345053339

then click ‘add application’

then click

http://apps.new.facebook.com/?fbnew_opt_out=1

then log out and log back in and u should be fine”

I’ve tried following those instructions and it seemed to work for me, though there are comments on the group about facebook chat now not working for some users. Personally I’m going to stick with the ‘new’ facebook because I like it but for those who want to roll back the choice is there; woopie!
